NOHFH is a proud participant in Women Build Week
![]() An initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s
Women Build program, the fifth annual National Women Build Week, sponsored by Lowe’s, challenges women to devote at
least one day between May 5 and May 13 to the effort to eliminate poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build, underwritten by Lowe’s, recruits, educates
and nurtures women to build—and advocate for—simple, decent
and affordable houses in their communities. Poverty housing is a severe threat to children’s health,
growth and potential. According to the Census Bureau, in the United States more than 12 million children—one
out of every six—is living in poverty.Women have the capability and determination
necessary to build Habitat for Humanity houses, addressing the problem of substandard housing in a concrete way so that families
have safe, decent and affordable homes. Women volunteers boost Habitat’s capacity to build more houses
and serve more families. More than 1,800 Women Build houses have been built since the program began in 1998.Lowe’s
is a national partner with Habitat for Humanity International. By 2013, Lowe’s will have contributed nearly $40 million
to Habitat’s work, as well as in-store how-to clinics and volunteer labor.
Originally NOHFH's Women Build project was to take place on Wednesday, May 9th. Due to inclement weather, the event was postponed until the following Wednesday. Women staff, board members, committee members and volunteers donned their purple Women Build T- shirts and headed out to the new house in Manchester. The women were met by Maria, the homeowner, and her Mom who joined with the others in a morning of yardwork - prepping the yard for seeding. After breaking for a quick lunch, the ladies headed out for phase two of their day. The afternoon was spent at the home of Doris. A Brush With Kindness had been started here a week ago but a little extra TLC was needed.Below are pictures from the wonderful day!
The ladies pose in front of the new house. The women clear away brush from the shed. A happy Doris at the end of the day!
