The heart of Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity’s mission work is volunteerism. Consider sharing your time, talents and gifts and make a difference in your community. NOHFH is pleased to offer a variety of volunteer opportunities including, but not limited to, construction, retail, non-profit management, fundraising, finance and social services.

ReStore Custodian

  • sweeping and mopping of front rooms of store
  • cleaning of bathrooms
  • dusting/cleaning of furniture and appliances
  • spot cleaning furniture as necessary
  • maintaining clean and tidy break area
  • work with warehouse personnel to assure an attractive, safe environment
  • Being alert for safety concerns

Art Department

  • responsible for taking all artwork off truck
  • pricing (utilizing computer price look-up, if necessary)
  • arranging art in attractive, safe manner
  • assist in pricing other collectibles/household items
  • assist customers with a pleasant, helpful attitude
  • expertise in art/collectibles a plus

Online Research/Sales

  • being available at truck unloading to identify specialty items to be priced
  • removing items to back office and do computer search to determine pricing
  • post items on Craigslist or other online sales sites
  • arranging items in attractive, safe manner
  • learn pricing system and price items as they come off truck
  • assist customers with a pleasant, helpful attitude


  • ability to do minor repairs to furniture and facility
  • ability to hang mirrors, pictures and light fixtures
  • assist with pricing of construction items
  • spot cleaning furniture as necessary


  • cashier duties and cash controls
  • answer telephones
  • learn pricing system
  • assisting customers with pleasant, helpful attitude
  • make sure ‘sold’ stickers are affixed to sold items

Truck Assistant

  • on-site pick up of in-kind donations
  • delivery of sold items
  • responsible for care of delivered/picked-up items
  • unload truck upon return to store
  • must be able to lift heavy furniture

Warehouse Support

  • assist in moving furniture from trucks to warehouse
  • arranging furniture in warehouse
  • assuring ‘sold’ items are moved to appropriate area
  • must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Pricer/Customer Service

  • learn pricing system and price items as them come off truck
  • assist customers with pleasant, helpful attitude
  • assist cashiers in making sure ‘sold’ stickers are affixed to sold items
  • light housekeeping duties


Food Fellowship Program

  • provide food and beverage donations for events, construction sites, volunteers, support committees, etc.
  • solicit local restaurants to donate food and drinks


  • participate in table events to inform community of opportunities and resources offered by Habitat
  • participate in speaking engagements
  •  assist in identifying communities that would benefit from Habitat
  • Assist in continued development of resource manual
  • become a member of the community outreach committee

Faith Relations

  • seeks to keep in touch with all various places of worship in the affiliate’s area
  • keep congregations informed about Habitat happenings
  • seek support for our mission
  • committee meets on the last Wednesday of every month at 11:30 a.m.

Homeowner Services

  • review/prequalify homeowner repair applications
  •  check financial data for pre-qualification
  • contact homeowner applications via phone
  • assist with background checks
  • accompany construction team for home repair assessments
  • attend meetings to vote on applications
  • attend homeowner meetings to sign contract (Scope of Work) and at completion of project (Exit Interview)

Homeowner Support

  • support homeowners in your area of expertise and experience (i.e. finance, repairs, maintenance, education, insurance, mortgages, etc.)
  • assist home repair applicant in completing the application process


  • has oversight responsibility for the correct placement of revenues within Northern Ocean Habitat
  • properly allocates funds to maximize interest and safeguard all funds
  • committee meets on the third Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at the Habitat offices


  • plans and executes fundraising events throughout the calendar year
  • goal is to raise funds to carry out mission work
  • committee meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Habitat offices


Construction communication mostly relies on email communications as opportunities may change suddenly based on weather, inspections and other unforeseen circumstances.

  • assist in building new house (note: our current home will be completed in late November; we anticipate building our next new home in Toms River in 2017)
  • assist with our A Brush with Kindness repair program
  • assist with minor exterior work, landscaping and yard clean-up for 21 Plus and Easter Seals’ group homes for disabled adults
  • on-site volunteer coordination
  • on-site outreach for food/drink donations
  • handymen needed for office
  • handymen needed in ReStore
  • assist in homeowner repair application house visits for assessments
  • assist in groundbreaking and home dedication ceremonies
  • assist in property due diligence and permitting
