giving back to those who served
Veteran Repair Program: Aging in Place
Ricky struggled alone for a long time before he found someone who could help. Due to long term health issues, the home of 22 years which he shared with a disabled son was barely habitable. He couldn’t keep up with the maintenance because of his health.
The bath was beyond repair. Leaky fixtures threatened safety and six square feet of tile had fallen off two walls above the bathtub. Peeling floor tile in the kitchen meant a constant a tripping hazard. Large trees overhanging the house had clogged the gutters with debris. Just about every space, inside and out, needed critical repairs.
He was at the end of his rope when a fellow veteran suggested that Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity could provide the help he needed. And when he reached out, Habitat provided that hand up.
Photos from Ricky’s home tell the before and after story in a way no words can convey. But rooms and doors and floors and siding weren’t the only things transformed. The repairs that Habitat provided transformed Ricky’s outlook on life and gave him hope for the future. For the first time in a long time, Ricky can now go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning knowing that he and his son are safe and secure in their own home.
Veteran Repairs are a special subset of Northern Ocean Habitat’s Aging in Place and Critical Home Repair Programs. Through them, we give back in a special way to those who served our country, allowing them to “age in place” safely and with dignity in the place they’ve called home for decades.
There are so many in northern Ocean County who just need a hand up to age in place and remain safely in their own homes. The more money we can raise, the more help we can provide. Please consider a gift in any amount. We promise that every penny will make a difference.
