November 8, 2016 – Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity will be raising funds towards the Building Homes from the Heart initiative which will build a Habitat home in Toms River. Occurring this year on November 29, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

This #GivingTuesday, Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity will be raising funds for their Building Homes from the Heart initiative. From September 30 through October 2, 2016, Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity and 100.1 WJRZ hosted the first ever Building Homes from the Heart blitz build event at the Ocean County Mall. During the weekend-long project, volunteers and local sponsors came together to begin construction on a Habitat home in the Ocean County mall parking lot for a deserving family while 100.1 WJRZ broadcasted live on-site. Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity also hosted the first ever Walk to Build 3-mile family fun walk in Lavallette earlier in September. Between both events, over $59,000 has been raised, but they still need your help. The Habitat home is currently in storage where it will remain until funding needs are met.

“We are determined to have this house built. This home will not sit in storage for a year and a half. We cannot be ok with that,” said Suzan Fichtner, executive director of Northern Ocean Habitat.

92Y − a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back − conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. In 2015, the fourth year of the movement, #GivingTuesday brought together over 45,000 partners in 71 countries and helped raise nearly $117 Million online in the US alone.

“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of  #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our fifth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”
